A walk from Tavistock
4th October, 2009.
Damp, grey, mizzley but mild. Trees dripping and mist in the valley bottom.
I started by parking on the verge of the lay by signposted to the Gun Club(464715) on the road out of Tavistock past the recycling centre. It would be great to combine this with a walk along the Tavistock Canal starting at the centre of town where kingfishers can be glimpsed. The track I followed was the green spots on the map, returning by the road.
Walk down the track. The river is on your left, Particliffe Wood on your right and as the track descends there is good access to the River Tavy at Wash Ford. Where the track swings down, apparently closer to the river this is the Clay Pigeon Club so take the right hand stoney but quite obvious track up the hill to reach the road. At the gate turn right and head downhill on the road to return to the start. Looking into the woods from the road there is some interesting terracing of the woods which I am presuming must be man made but must have taken some constructing.
The shooting started at 10.15 on the Sunday morning I was walking so perhaps best to avoid this time- it was surprisingly loud and I found a little unnerving.
Birds: Dipper and Grey Wagtail at Washford.
Flowers: the hedgerows and banks loked sad and ready for a rest!
Small joys: the discovery of a stretch of the Tavy with easy access.
