An even longer walk round Quethiock!
Dry, high cloud, intermittent sun, breezy. Great walking weather with a sprinkle shower in the last 200 yards.
2hrs. 45 minutes.
Start at Quethiock. Walk past the school along Treweese Road, take the left fork and then left again at Treweese Cross. Walk down the hill to Hepwell Mill and on to the lovely Hepwell Bridge. Do not cross the bridge but walk along the lane ( river on the right) to the ford after which the lane beginbs to climb to Trehunist. The lane feels like one of the deepest on the map so you do need the gates to get the views over the Tiddy Valley. At Trehunist turn right down and then up the hill to Tiland Road Farm. Keep going to Tilland Mill Farm, cross and admire the bridge and then turn left towards Luccombe. Keep on walking steadily up the hill towards Trehurst and then Blunts. At Blunts turn left towards Trebrow Gate and Pounda (noisy jolly dogs in the garden). Turn left towards Trecorme Mill and onwards back to Quethiock.
Birds: in short supply despite an insistent chaffinch. A few swallows. This is the quet month for birdsong and was sorely missed-no skylarks for accompaniment at all.
Flowers: the hedgerows are now looking way past their best and frankly bedraggled and rank. Bettony in profusion, knapweed, herb robert and the stalward red campion doing their bit to cheer. A hint of autumn with the intermittent splash of bright orange of the Wild Arum berries.
Small joys: simply being out in this lovely and quiet part of the map.The Tiddy is a very characterful busy river and the ford and bridges a delight. The seedpods of the red campion do look like small greek urns.
