Time taken: 11.00 -13.30.
Bere Ferrers Station to Clamoak Quay.Holes Hole then left along the footpath through the wood, right fork and across the field to the lane. Right turn to Ground Survey height (GSH)68.Left turn along lane. Right footpath to GSH 92. Footpath straight on under the railway bridge and over field and farm lane** to the Bere Alston Road. Turn right past GSH 124,fork right down Ley Lane and left at Ormonde House to rejoin road to “Beer Ferris Station”.
This was a gentle walk of great variety mostly on lanes along the edge of the Tamar, through a small wood and back along the ridge. The daffodils, although just past their full glory were everywhere in hedgerows, cultivated in fields and naturalised in woods. Primroses were out in profusion. Common Dog Violets in deep ‘violet’ and white. Horse chestnut leaves were just emerging, ash was not.
Great views over the Tamar and the Tavy. Saw the gig “Ginette” being rowed up the river and hauled in with some difficulty at Weir Quay. Rape was just coming into flower in the fields.
Birds: the sound of very pecky noisy woodpeckers around Tuckham Bridge.
Flowers: Common Fumitory
Small joys: the discovery of the ‘shop’ *at Weir Quay, a magnificent chandlery which stocks some chocolate, crisps and juice. The spelling of the village on the station sign
Navigational error: **right turn down footpath sign at Wootons Farm which didn’t seem to go anywhere.
*to be viewed as fortuitous and not to be relied upon, see walk 6-4-08
