Buckland Monachorum Roundabout
Weather: bright,high cloud, light breeze.
Time: just under 3 hrs.
Park in Buckland Monachorum (491683). I walked up the hill and turned left and left to Cuxton Farm but was daunted by the cows- I have used the field footpath (marked) on a previous occasion when it was cow free. It is pleasant well marked field path leading to a stile. This time I used the lane and turned right towards Torr Farm. Follow the lane past the entrance to Torr Farm and then turn right towards Fairtown. Turn left towards Coppice Town Farm, keep on and enter the National Park. Enjoy the view over the moorland. Walk straight ahead and then gradually descend towards Tavy Cottage and then right towards Double Waters.
Having explored the 2 rivers joining- good stones for a sandwich-keep on the south side of the Walkham and head towards Bucktor and gradually ascend the rise on a metalled track. I took the diagonal track past 'Spr' having missed the path towards Hele Plantation. Head towards the 151 on the map and then turn left along the lane. Before Long Ash there is a footpath ( the signpost was down but in the hedge) turn right into a field and follow the field edge. This path leads into the edge of a garden and then itno fields (all well marked and keeping to the edges). In the last 2 fields there were benign horses. Now on the lane it is an easy walk back into the village.
Birds: swallows and the ever present buzzards
Flowers: bluebells, cinquefoil. The hedgerows and just about to burst into summer glory.
Small joys:the first cut of hay and the wonderful pond below Long Ash.
