Callington New Bridge
Weather: bright ,clear and with a stiff breeze.
Time: 1 hr. 45m
Park at Newbridge on the Liskeard road out of Callington. Walk back on yourself, cross the main road and take the first left turn,up the river towards The Mill. At The Mill, just as the road start to rise and turn right there is a footpath sign and beautifully made stile taking you across fields- take it and meander straight across the field following the line of the sign post. You can see the stile at the end. There is a bridge over a small stream then head gently up the hill to the corner of a copse adjacent to the adjacent field. You may need to go through a metal gate to reach it.You can see the exit from the field ahead. Walk through the small holding ,braving the geese and reach the lane by a stone step stile in the wall.Turn left down the hill passing Lendra, Caddapit and Woodcock's Well. At the next farm ( War an Farth Farm)the sign for the field footpath is missing ( there is one at the other end)- it takes you diagonally across the field.Turn right and walk up the hill. At Tralland Farm (?? sorry ,couldn't decipher my recording) take the footpath sign across the field signposted to Trevigro. Th exit from this field is hard to find but does seem to be directly across from the stile. Go over a ramshackley bit of wall and half hearted stile, enter a little copse, and go through some scrub and what looks as if it might be really horrible bog in the summer ( I was helped by it still being a bit frozen underfoot), turn vaguely to the left corner ( don't be fooled by the cooking grill gate). Walk along the fence and there is a stile but this takes you into a paddock. I exited via the stables, the proper footpath appears to be through the next field where there is a dead stumpy tree. This bit is short but tricky- admire the wonderful old style hedge laying as you muddle through this bit.
At Trevigro take the lane to Newbridge and retrace ones steps down the hill but keep on the lane to Frogwell. I was intending to find the footpath to Pencrebar Farm but failed dismally from this end so I stuck to the lane- you might have better luck. Next time I will try it from the main road end which is clearly marked.
Flowers: not much around.
Birds: a 'family' of rather wonderful bullfinches feeding, I think off the buds, in thehedgerow trees just before FrogwellSmall joys: the starling roost at the farm just beyond Woodcock's Well ( where it says "Danger bulls Keep Out").The wires were solid with them and the sound magnificent.
The beginnings of catkins- spring is just around the corner.
