Gunnislake - Morwellham with options!
Warm spring sunshine.
3 hours- the track past Morwell is about 20 minutes each way.
The walk starts at the 'Fire Cottages' just on the Devon side of the Tamar close to the New Bridge (437723) where there is a small car park. The official trails take you up left to the high level route through the wood to Morwellham to the south and to Devon Great Consols to the north. Locals have always used the straight on unofficial riverside route to Morwellham. I am not necessarily recommending it as I was very thoroughly ( and indeed rightly) ticked off by the water bailiff for going across Impham fields to see the river- it does very clearly say private. However it is a lovely route with great river views and ends at Morwellham. I walked back the high level route, past Morwellham Farm and up the long steady hill to Pleasure Rock, then Chimney Rock and back to Gunnislake.
An alternative might be to park at The Rock (453712) (there is a useful parking lay by on the road down to Morwellham close to the junction) and walk down the wonderful farm track past Morwell (Public Footpath sign near the bus stop). When the metalled track runs out there are two field edges and stiles and then a gate which brings you out into the woods at Pleasure Rock- from there you could go north or south. The woods are ver conifer woody but the views from the rocky outcrops are what makes the walk worthwhile.
Birds: from the rocky out crops you are above the buzzards which is quite something.
Flowers: daffodils, wood anemones but best of all Purple Toothwort at Morwellham on the Riverside track. Never having seen it the density of the purple and the strange shape of the flowers make it look somehow unreal as if it has landed from outer space.Googling Purple Toothwort will elecit better photos than my snappy could manage. Would that all parasites were as wonderful as this.
Small joys: the discovery of the Toothwort and the lovely neatness of the farm and house at Morwell. If it hasn't been in a BBC period drama it should be!
