Gunnislake, Albaston, green lane after Albaston House
A varied figure of eight walk of quiet lanes, field edge paths, green lanes and National trust woodland.
Gunnislake (I walked from home, it could be just as easily started at Albaston). Head down green lane towards Danescombe on the map, turn righ onto metalled lane, at the bottom of the hill turn right into someone’s garden* and walk uphill by a fairy stream. Enter field and progrees uop hill, exit field and turn left onto quiet lane, follow road and after steady hill turn left at footpath sign and return to Danescombe ( you will recognise it!). Go up hill ( 2 crows feet) and turn up green lane ( rough but interesting walking), at lane turn right, then first left to Newton. Great views southwards. At Newton follow road round , at T junction take footpath ahead across fields. Hard to navigate follow the line of the original path and there is a stile into the Cotehele woods. Turn right to find the track, via steps that takes you to the bottom of the valley. The walk up the Danecombe Valley is wonderful, National Trust cottages, a stream and wonderful dappled light. At Danescombe I turned right and walked up the hill and headed for the dotted green track on the map whch winds through the back of Calstock offering glimpses of the river. Re enter Calstck ( I walked home to Gunnislake but you needn’t.)
Birds: yellow wagtail in the ruined bulding at Danescome.
Small joys: the river glimpses and the fairy stream at Danescombe
Navigational error: at *Danescombe the path goes through someone’s garden but is sunken and is on the right of the drive (looking north and up the hill)
