Lower Tamar Valley
Date Walked: 1st Feb, 2009
Time taken: 10.30 –12.00
A walk of green lanes, fields, and little road with great views over to Plymouth and the high moor beyond. Stiles and gates to be navigated
This was done into the teeth of a biting wind.Fields and stile areas were very plodgy
Start at St.John.Park where yo can, walk down the hill beyond the pub and take the No Through Road- also signed Public Footpath uo the hill. This soon turns into a lovely green lane, climb on and enter the field, go diagonally up the hill the next green lane is evident, pass a barn. You have reached the top of St.Johns Down and the road is ahead. Turn left for a short stretch ( it is likely to be busy in the summer) and take the footpath past ‘Works’ on the map( signed). The route hereonin is not clear, I walked down obvious field edge tracks and then headed diagonally down hill too the field gate on the left exiting by Mendennick ( Farm) . I turned right , the footpath to St. Jon is then on the left just opposite Mowhay Barn. The path brigs you out higher up the hill in St John.
Birds: heron, buzzard, fieldfare.
Flowers: catkins, snowdrops, garden primroses.
Small joys: new lambs!
See above are pictures of the ford at high tide at St.
