Sheviock to Sheviock via Narkurs, No Man's Land , the SW coast path and Portwrinkle.
Weather: glorious, the best day of the year so far. No wind and no vapour trails owing to the volcanic ash cloud.
Time taken: 4 hours
The church car park in Sheviock is usually open. Return to the church and cross the road to walk up Horsepool Lane. At the cross roads carry straight ahead past Pool. As the road rises there is a footpath sign on the right. take this and follow the path by the stream and gently up up the quiet valley. There is high potential for plodge if it hasn't been dry for some time. After a small wood the valley widens with apond at the bottom and great expanse of field. keep to the right hand field edge. At the stile enter the next field, the path appears to go straight across to the right of the farm buildings. At the lane turn left and carry on to reach Narkurs. Retrace steps via No Mans Land and then right to Triffle. Looking to the left there is a small isolated barn in the centre of the field- possibly Kellow. To reach the SW coast path I crossed a field (141 on the map) where car were parked- it looked well used- and then walked along the coast to Portwrinkle. Walk up Finnygook Lane to Crafthole. Leave the B3247, cut through the bollards round the back of the farm and take the right hand lane down the hill back to Sheviock
Flowers: yellow dead nettle, lady's mantle, water hemlock, alexanders and thrift about to bloom
Birds: the very first swallow of the year.Skylarks
Small joys: the sudden bursting into song of the skylarks. Nothing and suddenly at 10:22 they were at full volume- why?
The apparently working pump on the roadside at Sheviock
The profusion of determined black beetles trundling across the lanes.
The lawn of violets in Crafthole on the lane down to Sheviock.
