The east side of the Lynher Valey with some surprises.
Weather: mild (for this winter), no wind and a hint of spring.
Time: about 2hrs 30/45minutes
Start at Clapper Bridge (360652)on the River Lynher where there is parking available.Walk over the bridge and along the lane ( good marmalade and preserves for sale at a wayside stall) climbing steadily and past a lovely derelict rackety old cottage.Carry on up the hill past Singmore passing the footpath sign on your left for the path you will use on your return. At the top of the hill, past the sign Holwood Farm Business Centre turn right signposted to Quethiock and St. Ive. You are now heading fro Trebrow Gate.Just when you think you must have missed the footpath sign it appears - on the left turning into Penpoll Farm.Don't turn down the drive towards the house, carry straight on and you will be able to see the way marker at the left of the barns.Keep the barns on the right and head down the field. Here you will come upon a small lake with all sorts of birdlife and seats to enjoy. Leave the lake and carry straight on the way marked path into a field. Lambs in profusion when I did it. Go through the gate on your left and then keep the hedge on the left and cross 2 fields. As the land starts to fall you are heading for a gate with way markers on it. With what is a very ruined barn on the left navigate your way over a spring and head for a way marker stile to left of a house. Turn left up the hill and see a telephone box.Turn right at the x roads and then take the footpath sign almost immediately pointing down to the left. Walk across the car park and there is a way marker on a telegraph pole that takes you across the field. (Treatment plant on the right).Keep to the top of the field with the hedge on your left. Come through what looks like a short green lane and then you are in Holwood. Turn left up the lane and you see a public footpath sign on your right. There is a farm building which was in the process of being built- the footpath is a little vague around this but keep the hedge on your left and then head down a rather steep field to a gate at the bottom with in interesting half bridge...(still navigable across). Walk straight across the steep field and then take a right turn onto a farm track.Keep the farmyard on your right and walk up the lane.At the lane turn right and return to Clapper Bridge.
Flowers:snowdrops in the bank, forysthia, catkins, germander speedwell.
Birds: very noisy chaffinches, buzzards mewling and a very jolly starling roost at Furzehill and Penpol with Canada geese in the fields beyond the fishing lake.
Small joys; the starling roost at Furzelow farm that suddenly fell silent as you walked underneath it.As you walk back down the hill on your return to the car you suddenly see a magnificent stately home which looks as if it might be Newton Barton. I had never had a glimpse of it before- more research needed
