This was a short walk before picking up provisions in Waitrose and uses lanes with soft grass at the end near the river. It is buggyable but with a quay and deep water at the end of the walk- the stretch back up the hill isn’t as harsh as one imagines going down. It will offer good bird watching in the autumn if this walk in August is anything to go by
Park in Waitrose, walk to Carkeel by pavement, cross the road at the first right turn and walk east, take the second turning on the right to Moditonham and keep on walking down to the river.
You will pass through 2 delightful lodge houses and on the left a ruin which fellow walkers told me was a dovecote and that the house was owned by the National Trust. Press on and at the waters edge ( the tide was just starting to ebb) you will come across a quay and handy bench on a creek of the Tamar.
Birds: 5 egrets across on the other bank.
Flowers: betony, knapweed and a predominance of purples.
Small joys: this was a wonderful unexpected tranquil spot.
